Every time I am invited as speaker and lecturer, I ask the organizers what topic they want me to talk about (of course the topic should be in my field which is periodontology and dental implants).
This time, just a week before the national event, they told me I can choose the topic myself. Since I take such opportunities to update myself, I chose a topic which I didn’t talked about before; “Soft-tissue Considerations Around Dental Implants”.
This was one of the topics I always wanted to handle and this time I found myself with a 2-hour time limit to talk. The topic itself has much to offer but to stand on feet for two hours and deliver a lecture on one topic is not an easy task. Specially that I had to prepare a completely new presentation for it. I always make my own presentations and therefore I had to make sure things are close to perfect.
The challenging part was not only the topic but also the week full of appointed patients with heavy procedures, which didn’t give me much time to prepare. So, at the weekend and the day before the event I told my friends I cannot go out and meet them. then I sat at home from 9AM and finished my presentation at 1:00AM (straight 16 hours), just 10 hours before my presentation. I was tressed and nervous because unlike the previous ones I didn’t have much time to prepare and I didn’t have a prepared presentations to use them as my resources. It was all a new talk and a new presentation.
Fortunately, and thanks to my old trainings I am good at creating course and lecture outlines and therefore after crafting the outline of the topics I chose to talk about, I started to gather materials and resources. Also, I had to go to my surgery photos (photos I take during surgeries I perform). And selected pretty awesome cases, including the best works and the challenging ones which didn’t meet the expectations. Something I know is that not all cases are successful and I learn more from challenging cases than the successful ones. And to be able to prevent such incidences for my colleagues I make sure to share with them too.
The next day, I presented Infront of many colleagues, faculty members and of course my friends. But what made me happy was the feedback I received that how powerful the presentation was, remembering I had only a day before to prepare.
Though for next times I prefer to have more time to prepare and reduce the stress and be bale to manage my time and enjoy the weekend but I was happy at the end of the day because I was able to share what I have known and recently learned and also share my personal successful and challenging experiences.
